Local Alumni
J.M.W. Turner kept a house in Wapping for many years, converting a string of cottages into what is now Turner’s Old Star, one of the area’s oldest surviving pubs. The radical politician Thomas Rainsborough, a leading figure of the New Model Army during the English Civil War, was buried at the parish church on what is now Scandrett Street.
