Overview
St John’s Wood takes its name from the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, who owned the land in medieval times. Developed by the Eyre family from the early 19th century as London’s first garden suburb, it was designed around pairs of semi-detached and detached villas in generous gardens rather than the terrace streets typical elsewhere. Lord’s Cricket Ground has been here since 1814, and Abbey Road Studios since the 1930s, giving the area two of the most recognisable addresses in the world.
