Property Landscape

The residential market across the South Bank and Borough is largely modern. At the western end of the area, the former Shell Centre complex has been transformed into Southbank Place, with a cluster of new towers around Casson Square. The Whitehouse Apartments, a conversion of part of the original Shell Centre building in Portland stone, offers a more established alternative with a pool, spa, and concierge. Further east, Neo Bankside, Triptych Bankside, and the ongoing Bankside Yards scheme add further contemporary options. Away from the riverside, warehouse and industrial conversions around Bermondsey Street add a more characterful alternative. The Roupell Street conservation area, a lovely enclave of early Victorian terraces west of Waterloo station, offers the closest thing to a period residential street in this part of London.

Southbank and Borough Highlights

• Borough Market, with origins dating to the 13th century, one of the world’s great food markets.
• The Southbank Centre, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Hayward Gallery, and the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Local Alumni

John Ruskin lived on Denmark Hill until the arrival of the railway spoiled his view, and Ruskin Park is named in his honour. Boris Karloff, born William Henry Pratt in Camberwell in 1887, went on to play Frankenstein’s monster in the defining 1931 Universal film. Mike Leigh, Tim Roth, Frank Auerbach and Florence Welch are all alumni of Camberwell College of Arts.

Waterloo station provides Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern, and Waterloo and City line services, alongside national rail to destinations across the south of England.
