Nine Elms

Nine Elms is London’s largest and most ambitious regeneration project, stretching along the south bank of the Thames from Vauxhall Bridge to Battersea Power Station.

Overview

Nine Elms takes its name from a row of elm trees that once bordered the lane running west from Vauxhall to Battersea. For most of its history it was an industrial quarter and the site now occupied by Battersea Power Station was occupied by reservoirs. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the Power Station was built with its four iconic chimneys between 1929 and 1955, supplying around a fifth of London’s electricity at its peak before closing in 1983. From 2012 onwards, a 227-hectare regeneration programme has transformed the area with around 20,000 new homes planned by 2030.
