Overview
The name Dulwich derives from the Old English Dilwihs, meaning marshy meadow where dill grows, first recorded in 967. The manor was owned by Bermondsey Abbey for four centuries before passing to the Elizabethan actor Edward Alleyn, who founded Dulwich College in 1619. The Dulwich Estate, still managed by the College’s governors today, has deliberately restricted development and preserved the area’s semi-rural character, making it one of the most distinctive residential enclaves in London.
