Clapton’s grandest houses once attracted senior London merchants and financial brokers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby Sutton House was built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadleir, a protégé of Thomas Cromwell who rose to become Principal Secretary of State to Henry VIII, and the wider area is closely associated with both men’s history in Tudor London.
