Overview
Camberwell takes its name from the Old English Cumberwell, a reference to a well associated with the Britons, and appears in the Domesday Book as a village of some substance surrounded by farmland. Up to the mid-19th century it was visited by Londoners for its rural tranquillity and mineral springs, with wealthy residents including John Ruskin on Denmark Hill. The arrival of the railway in the 1860s triggered rapid Victorian development, and the opening of Camberwell College of Arts in 1898 cemented its association with creative culture that continues today.

Mike Leigh, Tim Roth, Frank Auerbach and Florence Welch are all alumni of Camberwell College of Arts.
