Property Landscape
Bayswater’s residential character spans several distinct generations of building. The grand stucco terraces around Connaught Square and the streets running up towards Craven Hill date from the early to mid 19th century, many converted into lateral apartments, alongside mews houses and family houses tucked behind. The Lancasters, a Grade II listed 1850s terrace at Lancaster Gate overlooking Hyde Park, was converted into apartments in 2011 and remains one of the area’s most coveted addresses. A number of 1960s mansion blocks can also be found across the area. More recently, Queensway has seen striking new schemes at either end of the street: The Whiteley, a Foster and Partners restoration of the historic department store, and Park Modern, offering new apartments overlooking Hyde Park.

Local Alumni
J.M. Barrie lived at 100 Bayswater Road, directly opposite Kensington Gardens, from 1900 to 1909, writing Peter Pan there. In 1912 he secretly commissioned and installed the bronze Peter Pan statue that still stands by the Long Water, so that children would believe the fairies had placed it there overnight.
