Appearing in the Domesday Book as Belgeham, Balham follows the line of the Roman road Stane Street along Balham High Road and Balham Hill. The area developed rapidly after Balham station opened in 1856, attracting middle-class Victorian families and leaving a legacy of well-built terraced houses that remain the backbone of the residential market today.
